file manager root on group basis?

I’m trying to restrict users to certain folders in the file manager so that they can’t mess around with important files. However, the only thing I could find was this

This means, that if I log in as the admin, I can’t see the other files either, which I may need to from time to time. So, I’m looking at restricting folder access through permissions and ACLs rather than through system settings. Is this possible to do?

You can set file_manager_path as a *user* setting rather than a system setting. That way, it only applies to that user.

I’m pretty sure you could also do it the other way around, though I haven’t tried it. Set the restricted path as a System Setting (like you did already), then set the root path as a user setting for the admin Super User.

thanks for your reply - however, no joy. I added the setting to a user, no change. I copied the settings from the system to the user but they could still see the whole tree. I then set the system path and all users are restricted - including the admin. Adding the setting to the admin user and setting the path to blank so that it would show everything doesn’t work either. Do I need to do anything else to activate the individual user settings?
