Hi all, I’ve been powering websites with modx for about 4 years now, I really feel modx is the dream tool for any web developer who knows what they are doing. Modx gives you unparalleled flexibility and complete control over what your website does. You could see it as a full feature CMS, or most importantly, as a framework to build your applications on top of, and this is precisely where it shines.
I do have some reserved thoughts on revolution though which I’ve been holding on to ever since the first beta was released. I feel now my frustration has come to a point where I should voice out in case it may help.
In the past, I had a really hard time installing Revolution, originally due to some server requirements which I didn’t meet (pdo), then a bad mysql version (which was proven to be problematic) and eventually when I got it installed and working I had a hard time adjusting to the new tags syntax and the right plugin equivalents from evolution.
Because of this and since Revo was still beta I decided to continue with Evolution hoping things in Revo will gradually adjust. And I truly feel it has.
Recently, with the launch of an official release, I decided to give it another go. It installed flawlessly and things have gone smoothly. I learned and realized most of the changes were much needed and new syntax adapted makes absolute sense. I was quite happy, until today.
Today I found myself completely locked out of the system. When it first happen I just said, oh, okay, let me unlock myself by editing the DB directly. But I wasn’t locked in the DB, so then I though... humm maybe I enabled captcha? But I didn’t. So I started to get annoyed and started googling. Then I found some hints and checked one by one... disabled captcha in the cache file, double checked GD and freetype, double checked my user block status in the DB, checked for mod_security in my install... just about every single thing I read which could cause this I verified and addressed, and I still couldn’t log in.
I tried different browsers, deleted sessions, cookies, I’ve tried just about anything I can think off, no result. Every time I try to login I am redirected to the form. If I click on reset the password, it sends me a new one but it does not log me on, I charged the password directly (following bob’s guide) on the DB and still can’t log. And now I feel there is this little green gobbling inside the server loling at me and my frustration.
Maybe my head is not in it right now, after all it is a saturday, maybe some bigger power is asking me not to work today, maybe I am being tested, or just perhaps I do not have the patience today.
Summing up, I feel revo is a great step forward, but I feel I’ve faced just about too many weird issues with it, and further I test it, I am sure more things will come up. After all that is what being an early adopter is all about.
My intent is not a cry for help nor a complain, I am very pleased with Modx and will continue to use it, support it and promote it, as my web developer days would be much longer without it. I’m just sharing my frustration with others and perhaps with it inspire more people to further document their findings, their workarounds, their fixes... that is in the long run how we will be able to keep things running cleanly and smoothly.
