Custom Installer

I’ve been working in Evo for the last 3 years and am finally making the conversion to Revo - and quite happy about what I’ve seen since I last left it at RC-1. Loving a lot of the features like Package Management and new snippets like If and getResources.

My question, like the one I asked back when I was going it for Evo, is: can you create a custom installer based on settings, Resources, TVs, Chunks, Snippets, etc. that I’ve set up as a base for all my sites?

Maybe I’m making this up, but I recall at one point someone saying (back in RC1 days) that with Revo you could do that - and I’m thing Package Management had something to do with it?

I’ve done it with Evo with success, but having to mess with .tpl files and all the sql set up files is daunting and I was hoping for a ’quick/easier’ way to do it with Revo?

PS Big kudos to the MODx team on Revo! My company (TopSpot IMS) uses it exclusively for websites. Now it’s time to Revo-up!

Absolutely doable with a transport package in Revo.

There is an add-on called PackMan that will let you pick items and add them to a package (and save a profile defining the package). Then, you create the package as a single .zip file with a couple of clicks.

In the new install, you put the package .zip file in the core/packages directory, search locally for packages, and install it with a couple more clicks.

If you need to create relationships between the parts of the package, interact with the user during the install, or perform validation before installing, it gets more complicated and you need to create a transport package script to build your package, but the installation on the new site is the same.

The Batcher component looks really nice, but I’m not seeing where to add items to a package. Also, I’m only seeing 2 tabs (Resources & Templates). How would I go about "packaging" everything I have: Resources, Templates, Chunks, TVs, Snippets, etc?

You can package Templates, Snippets, Chunks, and Directories with the Packman add-on... but not Resouces, nor TV’s ...

So there’s not one transport package to move the entire site’s settings, resources, yada yada?

Almost seems easier to zip the entire site’s source files the do a sql dump and carry that around.

Would using Packman & Batcher together do this?

Batcher is like DocManager...

PackMan is to pack your site.
TVs are packed along with the templates.
Resources and other stuff will be done in future versions...

Go to the PackMan JIRA issues page to propose/suggest features
so they can be worked on...

Thanks for the insight guys. I like PackMan. Now it just needs to pack up resources Looked for the JIRA page for packman with no luck. All’s well though. I only have 11ish resources that I want to have packaged. But the elements are what count.
