I just started using Modx Evo and I’m trying to get my Wayfinder call to work.

Essentially, I need to display the parent item as well as the children for the given section of my website.

    My current Wayfinder call is:
    [[Wayfinder? &startId=`[[parent]]` ]]

From this I receive a parse error. I read on the Modx Wiki that I’m supposed to set the internal parent call to uncached with !’s, but I’m not sure how to do this.

    Thank you for your help!

In Evo the the correct syntax for the parent variable is [tt][*parent*][/tt] or [tt][+parent+][/tt].

The staryID parameter usually is a numeric value. You will find that value in the tree menu, on the right of any resource

        Example:

        home(1)
        services(2)
        gallery(3)
        media(4)
        contact us(5)

So, if you want to create a menu that start from the root, you use this Wayfinder Call:
        [[Wayfinder? &startId=`0` ]]

        If you want as parent for example "services" use this Wayfinder Call;
        [[Wayfinder? &startId=`2` ]]

This is an uncached version of the same:
        [!Wayfinder? &startId=`0` !]

Usually the startId value would be [*parent*] if you want it to be the parent of the currently viewed page.

[+parent+] would only be used if the Wayfinder snippet tags were being used in a Ditto or other snippet’s tpl, since that is a placeholder.

The only time you need to worry about cached/uncached is if you are using another snippet to generate the startId value, as in the very common case of using the UltimateParent snippet. In that case, the outer Wayfinder snippet tags need to be uncached, and the inner UltimateParent snippet tags need to be cached.

            Great! [*parent*] worked.

Thank you for you explanation. That makes a lot of sense.
