well that worked - as you would expect - which proves there is nothing fundamentally wrong with my environment, but I would still like to get it running under its original name - so I just need to find out what I need to do to really clear out a prior install - which I seem to recollect I might have seen something from BobRay on that - so I’ll have a hunt.
Wait, you just drag/dropped the folder in Mac OS X into the existing one?
OS X completely overwrites directories - not merges them - when you move things around in Finder, so that may explain why you lose your config.inc.php. You have to use the ditto command line tool in Terminal to merge files.

Thanks Splittingred but I wasn’t trying to merge - just to get a fresh clean install in the same location.
Anyway I have found the problem.
If it seems like it must be something really stupid then it usually is...
I have a web dev directory that I do my coding in, then an apache sites directory where I test from and where I point mamp to, but for this particular site my mamp entry was pointing to my web dev directory so I was running setup in one location and testing the outcome in another. Duuh!
