problem with publishing in future...

hi,

I am trying to create a document that should automatically be published in the future (say tomorrow, today is 2010-08-12)
I see 3 places that influence the publishing of a document:
"published" under create edit document
in page settings:
Published on
and
publish date

Now my guess is I have to leave the first 2 blank but that doesn’t seem to work...
If I set the publish date in the future, the page does not get published before that date, but also not after that date! It only gets published if I resave the resource after the publish date without changing anything.

Am I doing something wrong or is this a bug ?

I tried something new for tomorrow...

filled in publish date and marked published
after save the "published" is not saved.

Wonder if it will work now.

didn’t work either...

But I noticed somthing else.
When I save another resource (not the one with published not checked and a publish date), modx seems to check all publish date’s and publish those.

this made me wonder, do I need to activate some auto check in the modx settings to make auto publish work automatically ?

That’s been fixed, and wouldn’t affect your problem anyway.

I think your problem is that MODx is lying dormant when no one is visiting the site or working in the Manager, so no publication is going to happen during that period. Certain actions (and I’m not certain what they are) will trigger MODx to check all the publication dates and publish the appropriate documents. I think it will happen with any visit to the front end, but I’m not positive. If so, you could set up a cron job to visit the home page periodically.

Yep, the function ’checkPublishStatus’ in modrequest.class does this on normal page loads, the manger response classes are derived from this class so I guess its also hooked from saving/creating resources etc. If you are getting any hits on your site you should see things being published/unpublished as you’ve set them but this is not absolute, if you have a resource to be published at say 01:01 it will be published on the first event(page load) after that time, not exactly on it.

let me see if I get this right,

I set up a page to be published in 1 hour.
nobody visits my website for 3 hours
I visit my wesite after 4 hours (a completly other part)
so my page will be published after 4 hours?

but what do you mean by "normal page loads" shamblett?

Yes, its event driven(page load, resource save etc.), not an absolute timed event, you can set this up as BobRay suggests by using cron or windows task scheduler if its a problem for you.
