I am trying to install Revolution 2.0 PL (English) on a Domain Hostmaster (resold GoDaddy) Linux Apache server, that we have setup with php 5 and MySQL 5.
DomainHostmaster.com/GoDaddy does not like to give out version numbers because #1 they have so many servers that one might not be the same as another because they are in perpetual upgrades (of something). And I’m not sure as to how I would see what extensions are active/enabled.
I did enable write (777) to the cache directory.
At first, the install went as well as it did for Evolution 1.0.2. But then I had to connect to the database. As an example of a DomainHostmaster.com/GoDaddy database host address name, I give you...
modxdbexample.db.6669988.hostedresource.com
That’s not it, but it is close. I think this worked the time I installed Evolution 1.0.2. At least I don’t remember having any problems. But I had full access to the account at that time, and now I don’t.
Is there some other name I should be using? According to tech support, that’s the host name.
I really don’t envision too many problems, I am surprised I am having any at all. I am sure we can easily get around this one. But I got stuck here and to my surprise, the website was displaying an error message something like...
"503 ERRROR. Not Authorized. The Website is temporarily unavailable."
This frightened the heck out of me because although I want to install to the website’s root directory, I had an index.shtml file to hide anything that was going on with the install, so that this could all take place behind the scenes and no one would be any the wiser.
Complete failure at not alarming the client (and their customers) who were so dang proud that I had finally put up a contact page.
I quickly saved a copy of index.html and uploaded it. Nothing happened. I renamed, then deleted the ht.access file. I still was getting the error.
So then, on the remote server, I moved the modx distro files and directories to /site/ and logged into the hosteddomainname.com/site/setup/ directory only to see a blank white page. So, I figured I screwed it all up and now deleted all the files and directories in /site/
I now plan on re-uploading all these files to the server, but I really would prefer that all the modx files be in the root directory AND that the index.html (or index.shtml) would continue to function (like it is doing now, as the website root’s default "home page" file) while I installed modxcms. Or do I have to install to a subdirectory on the system? If so, WHY????
Let me know what file I need to edit, and why. I don’t understand why. I couldn’t fathom a guess.
So, to sum it up...
1) Where do I get the correct host name from on a godaddy/domainhostmaster.com hosting control panel?
2) What file do I have to edit to keep my index.html file live while installing modx (until it is ready)?
3) Why is the installer taking over at this stage of the game when it is corrupting the site with an error file?

If I sound critical, I don’t mean to be, I am actually trying to help by pointing out some things that are bothering me. I am just trying to get and use modx (on more than one godaddy/domainhostmaster.com account) and I expect this to be the first of many installs.
Feel free to ask me any configuration questions, but unless godaddy/domainhostmaster.com makes the answers available I might not be able to answer.
I do know that there are a couple of minor adjustments I will need to make for the domainhostmaster.com/godaddy web servers as have been pointed out for my Evolution install, but these are easily handled after the install has successfully completed.
