Not urgent: HTTP_MODAUTH, new in RC3?

I’m creating a new component...and while i’m doing this i’m peeking over to the doodles component every now and then.

I see that every connector (when accessed directly in the browser, i used this to see what my response was every now and then)
now explicitly needs the HTTP_MODAUTH set in the request. (This happens automaticly i assume...)

This made me wonder, what is the additional security gained over normal internal session checking that MODx does in the
core...

I’m just curious, so can anybody shed some light on this?
