Hi - this is some notes I made while introducing v2.00 rc2 manager interface to someone I hope to share website maintenance load with.
They only had a pointy haired boss spec laptop running IE8 - the problems were mostly to do with the lack of screen resolution.
1) Toolbar is wrapping over the navigator.
I have a Components tab as well as the usual toolbar entries. This wraps once it bumps into the ’Logged in as’ block. Unfortunately it wraps on top of the Navigator tabs making it exceeding difficult to select the Resources tab. If the user has a long login name then all the navigator tabs become really hard to select as they are all underneath toolbar buttons. I tried this myself and it is reproducible with FF and IE8.
2) Navigator Expand All not working.
With my MODx Evolution editors I always got them to start out with Expand All so they could see the whole site structure and quickly find ’their’ page. The Expand All button seems inoperative in FF and IE8.
3) Navigator minimum width is too wide.
When editing a resource about a third of the available window width went to the navigator. It could be resized and made bigger - but not smaller. The remaining 2/3 of the width is rather small for editing page content. A smaller minimum size would be much appreciated. This was seen in IE8.
4) Resource editor floating buttons are a problem.
I’ve installed the CKEditor plugin. On the pointy haired boss’s screen the editor just fitted into the available height! One problem was the excessive number of toolbars he had turned on in IE8; another problem was that the lack of width (see above) caused two of the CK toolbars to wrap resulting in huge toolbar height. This wasn’t the main problem because the floating Save, Duplicate, Preview, etc buttons were overlayed on top of the CK toolbar making it really difficult to use! The styling is similar enough that hitting one of the page buttons is quite easy to do. I suggest these button are not floated, but are repeated so that they appear at the top and bottom of the page.
5) Resource title hidden under floating buttons.
Similar to the previous problem, but less likely to result in losing changes. When viewing a resource the Save, Duplicate, Preview, etc buttons overlay the Document name. This is confusing as it’s not clear which page is currently being displayed. Same solution as 4 please.
I guess it won’t be too long before we see some alternative Manager templates - but it would be great if these could be addressed in the core template.
