    Hi,

I’d like to upgrade to revolution 2.0.2 and have read through some instructions as to what to do, but nothing necessarily explaining how. Could anyone enlighten me as to the ideal way to back-up my files/database before upgrading?

Also, when upgrading, is it exactly the same process as a fresh install - i.e. copying the files to my desired location and running ’setup’ - or does anything additional have to be carried out?

I’m currently running modx on my own machine, for development purposes.

    Thanks.

      Hi,

Nothing complex here. Backup your DB as you would normally (for example with phpmyadmin) and backup your files (backup is not a must - at least never had a single problem with upgrades - but that’s the safest way i guess).
Copy over & overwrite the new files of modx-2.0.2-pl.zip. Browse to yoursite.tld/setup and follow the instructions (it should propose you to upgrade by default).
You are done and can enjoy the MODx simplicity ^^

      Hope that helps.

What is your existing site Revolution or Evolution.

There is no direct upgrade from Evolution to Revolution at present.
          DEVELOPMENT ENV:- Ubuntu 12.04 | MODx Revolution 2.2.8 | LAMP 2i Apache 2.2.22 | Php 5.3.10 | Mysql 5.5.31 MySQL client version: 5.5.31

            I should’ve mentioned - it’s from a previous version of revolution.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I’ll be sure to give it a go tomorrow.

Ok, I’ve started the upgrade process but when checking the Installation Summary I get the following error:

Checking if C:/xampp/htdocs/modx/core/config/config.inc.php exists and is writable: Failed! ...which I assume isn’t good.

The file’s there but is Read-Only - I’m a little hesitant to change this as it’s not been mentioned anywhere previously.

I’ll pause the upgrade for the moment and hope that someone can steer me in the right direction.

Ehe, don’t stress. Make it writable for the upgrade process, then put it back as read-only. I guess it’s needed for the upgrade process to know your actual configuration.

                  Many thanks Romain!

I pretty much figured that would be the case, but this is all still so new to me.
Coming from a design background, back-end jiggery pokery is something I tend to steer away from.

Purely out of interest, are there any plans to revise/improve the Modx documentation? I daresay it’s probably fairly low down on the priority list, but it may certainly help expand its user base and, potentially, its revenue. Speaking as someone who works largely in design, I can vouch that Modx’s approach to content management makes complete sense to me by way of its separation of content, mark-up and styling. I’m happy to plug away, because I’m fairly certain that the rewards will be significant in the long-run - I just wonder at others newcomers’ persistence levels.

Food for thought, if nothing else...

I do understand you, i’ve got almost the same background.

Anyway, for the documentation contribution, you might be interested in reading http://rtfm.modx.com/display/revolution20/Becoming+a+Core+Contributor

Hope that helps, and since i forgot it… welcome aboard & enjoy your stay smiley
