Friendly URL .htaccess causes server error (subdomain problem?)

Hi,

I tried the friendly URL instructions here: http://modxcms.com/forums/index.php?topic=42338.0, and as soon as I upload the .htaccess file to the root I get a server error.

The site I’m working on is currently using a test subdomain. I wonder if that’s the problem. Does this only work if the subdomain is www.?

You may be getting this error if you have duplicated the RewriteEngine On in an .htaccess file in the root and another in a subdirectory. Having it turned on in the root directory is sufficient to have it on in all subdirectories; .htaccess settings are inherited. I have had some servers throw a 500 error in this case.
