Suggestion: Container Snippet/Chunk

I’ve been working with and writing CMSes for years and I have to say that MODx Revolution is the first one that satisfies all of my CMS needs. Great job and keep up the awesome work. I’m really digging the improvements in b5/RC1.

As I’m using Revolution, I’m finding that it would be quite nice if some snippets and chunks came with the installation. One bit of code in particular I’d like to see is a chunk/snippet (I forget which one is dynamic) that can list links to all the sub-resources within a container, not unlike http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Tags/wp_link_pages. Having some of these commonly-used bits of code instantly at my disposal would really be helpful so I don’t have to spend time searching through the forums to see if someone’s written something or if I’m going to have to generate the code myself.

Can you guys add a section to your website where people can download chunks, snippets, mods, etc. like WP or Drupal have for their add-ons? That would really be helpful.

The thinking is to not load the default install down with snippets or chunks that the user may not need. There’s also the intention to make sure everyone knows that they are third-party components and not part of MODx itself since the quality will vary and people shouldn’t assume that something is wrong with MODx because a package won’t work right.

It’s likely that in the future, there will be packages that contain multiple commonly used components. In fact, you could create one yourself and include the components *you* think should be there by default.


Try going to System | Package Management and clicking on the "Download Extras" button. The interface for the Package Retriever there is still in progress, but it will give you the idea (and access to a bunch of packages containing snippets, chunks, and plugins). The components for MODx Evolution are mixed in but won’t download in Revolution.

During the beta phase, the focus has been on functionality. For the release, there should be multiple content packs available for such needs. Open to suggestions on what all you think would be handy for different purposes, etc.
