MySQL Client version requirement?

hi.

i’m having problems installing beta5 unless the directories deemed ’writable’ are chmod 777.

in reviewing some threads, such as the one here:

it seems mysql client version may be involved.

what is the requirement for mysql client? (so i can tell mt host).

nobody wants to run with 777, so after installation can i change chmod on these directories to something less than 777? without it affecting revo? if so, what?

what is too old and is there anything too new?

is any 5.0.x cool?

is 5.1.x bad?

My database version = 5.0.87. I could upgrade to 5.1.x if necessary.

What would be a good Client version for 5.0.87? (Or should I upgrade to 5.1.x?)

UPDATE - I asked my host. They said:

Hi,

Phpmyadmin may be reporting it’s own version. Here’s what RPM says about the system packages:

[root@host ~]# rpm -qa | grep -i mysql-client
MySQL-client-5.0.87-0.glibc23

You can see here that the client version is 5.0.87. Let me know if you have any other questions.

The MySQL client version used by your PHP installation should match the MySQL server version. It’s usually not a problem if the client is one or two minor versions different, but it can cause problems in database queries if there are incompatibilities. However, this only impacts database access, and has nothing to do with file/directory permissions.
