How to install the core out of the web root - instructions

OK it took me a while so here is what worked for me, I hope it helps others!

1) Make sure your server requirements are met. This includes checking if you have the standard open_basedir restriction in place. If so you have to edit your local php config file (may be httpd.include) to include the intended core location in your open_basedir.

2) Upload all files from the standard package (not advanced) and directories to your web root (public_html, httpdocs etc)

3) Move the directory core to its new location
eg
- /usr/local/revolution
- /usr/local/modxrevolution
- /usr/local/modxr
etc

4) Edit all config.core.php file
/config.core.php
/manager/config.core.php
/connectors/config.core.php
/setup/includes/config.core.php

5) Check permissions on all folders
- connectors should be 777
- managers should be 777
- / should be 777
- [core]/packages should be 777
- [core]/cache should be 777
- [core]/export should be 777

6) Create a blank file "/core/config/config.inc.php" and make it writable

7) Create blank database for install

8) Navigate in a browser to the setup directory and complete setup

9) Change your root directory back to 755 fro 777

10) Change your /[core]/config/config.inc.php to 444

One other thing, if you miss something and the install doesn’t work then delete ALL the files and start again. Things get written as the install proceeds and that seems to stuff up further installs if you go back and fix something and then try to resume install. Saves a lot of heartache to delete everything and restart the install from scratch.

Your permissions wont have to be 777 for RC1 - to be honest, this was just a permissions-checking bug in the beta3 release.

In fact, it’s a security hazard to leave your permissions at 777; only the following directories should be 775; the rest should be 755 with files that are 644. For those of you who have sudo shell access, it’s a simple command to do before install:



And then when finished with the upgrade:



Again, I want to reiterate that the 777 bug is a beta-3 problem; this will not be so for beta4 and RC1 (and already isnt so for SVN).

If you don’t have sudo access, FileZilla will let you make the same changes via GUI.

Hey guys you won’t believe it- took the week off work to learn joomla but it sucks so this morning I switched to modx after reading umpteen ’unsung hero reviews’ and I believe it will deliver

But I have a problem which is that I can’t seem to transfer all my files from the modx folder to my web space folder without at least 25 files failing to transfer in filezilla

Here’s the last 3 entries on my error report

We can’t do anything about your problems with transferring files to your host. Also, this topic is specifically about alternative installation instructions; please go to http://svn.modxcms.com/docs/display/revolution/ for documentation on getting started with MODx 2.0.0, known as Revolution (please be aware this is beta software and still in development). Though if you are not yet familiar with MODx, you may want to start with the stable release 1.0.0, known as Evolution.

Yep these installation instructions are only required if you want the one install to run several domains or subdomains.

90% + of installs would not require this I would think.

Putting the core a non web-accessible directory is a good security measure even for a single domain.
