208 -> 211 Update failure

Backed up files and dbase before updating 208 to 211.

Site doesn’t display. Editing a Resource in the tree displays a blank Manager. I can edit and save Elements.

I use only the bare minimum of Elements:
getResources
Wayfinder
Breadcrumbs

I merged the 211 folders with the existing structure. Was that the problem?

Are you sure the new files overwrote the older ones? That doesn’t always happen, especially if you use FTP.

Be sure to manually delete all files in the core/cache directory and clear your browser cache and cookies.

Then run Setup (be sure "Upgrade" is checked).

Ah well, that didn’t work. I usually have no problem with using SFTP via Transmit to merge folders.

Gonna download cyberduck because it’s never given me issues like that. But... I’ve done this twice now and I’m still unable to display the website, and still unable to edit/see Resources.

It’s possible that one or more files was corrupted or missed in transfer. It happens more often than you might think. Some people prefer to upload a .zip file and unzip it on the server.

I actually do that for fresh installs, but I’m way too conservative to do that with an upgrade. Won’t it just replace the directories wholesale without merging?

I fear that my core/components and core/packages directories would be replaced. Or does that just not matter?

IIRC, neither of those directories is included in the install package, nor is the assets directory or the config.include.php file (though I always check to make sure).
