I’ll be applying when the application period for mentoring organizations opens on Monday. Anyone care to volunteer to be a mentor? I will of course be one, but I’ll need several to commit to this as coding mentors.

Also, if anyone would like to offer input on some of these application questions, here are the ones I could use input on

2. Why is your organization applying to participate in GSoC 2008? What do you hope to gain by participating?
7. What is the URL for your ideas page?
10. Does your organization have an application template you would like to see students use? If so, please provide it now.
12. Who will your mentors be? Please include Google Account information.
13. What criteria did you use to select these individuals as mentors? Please be as specific as possible.
14. What is your plan for dealing with disappearing students?
15. What is your plan for dealing with disappearing mentors?
16. What steps will you take to encourage students to interact with your project’s community before, during and after the program?
17. What will you do to ensure that your accepted students stick with the project after GSoC concludes?

Well, alright then; maybe next year...

I think most of the coders here are just too busy trying to make ends meet as web developers, as well as raising families, and don’t have all that much extra time or energy.

I have the time, but no formal training and all my coding is done by trial-and-error with a heavy hand on the Google search button, so I don’t think I’d make a very good mentor in a structured situation like this.

It did sound tremendously time-consuming when I read about it. I would be a barely qualified mentor but was actually half hoping to be a student since it pays so much better.
