[Answered] Communicating about 0.9.7 (and 0.9.6.x)

I might have skipped infos during my absence, please bear with me if it has been adressed already.

First, this thread is not about getting a release date (and I make sure I never give one) but a rough idea of where things are today, who is involved, but also a quick brief of how to answer enquiry about participating to the developpement process, getting access to alpha/beta testing... etc.

The reason why I am asking is I don’t want to give inaccurate answers to those who ask access or progress report, and I have more and more questions on the french side.

Here is what I have gathered from various posts I have read :

• people who want to participate in the developpement process are to ask Jason for a SVN access to the private 097 branch
• there might be an early access program to the alpha/beta, ETA and criteria to be determined (subscribers ? resources contributors ? etc...)
• there will, as usual, be a public beta but we’re still a few months aways from it. The message I have been sending so far is : be patient, it’ll be worth it

It could be nice, at some point, to feed the MODx blog about developping 0.9.7 - if there is some time to do so - I realize that might be hard

Last but not least, I recall the "new line" was to do frequent 0.9.6.x "bug fixes" release (like, every month or so) : is it still planned ?

I don’t think I answered this one however. And it would be, yes, we do plan to release bug fix releases in the 0.9.6 series, even after 0.9.7 goes public beta; I’m sitting on several fixes and a few new features already for 0.9.6.1. I’ll try and take care of that later this week.

I imagine some will want to stick with the old way until enough pioneers take the plunge and migrate to the new way, and we don’t want to stifle any contributions to that branch, even post 0.9.7 release as far as I am concerned. That doesn’t mean I will be the one to produce all of these releases in the future, but we can maintain that branch in SVN as long as it makes sense to.

And I do think this is the way to go for the "transition" process, contrary to what most think they’ll do, not everyone will go for 0.9.7 straight away indeed. There will undoubtedly be a phase where resources will not be adapted for 0.9.7, and anyway there will be a learning process.

As far as I am concerned, I think I’ll experiment on 0.9.7 - learning - while maintaining my clients website to the latest 0.9.6. New projects are a different matter, as long as I have a good grasp of 0.9.7 I’ll start directly with it.

I think one of the key of the transition is the learning process of resources contributors, the xPDO forums is a great way to make that easier (I know I make a point of reading it even though some things are out of my grasp I confess...).
