Maybe we should add this to the .htaccess file; from what I have read it doesn’t hurt if it’s not needed, and certainly solves a lot of problems if it is.

Can anyone more well-versed in all things .htaccess-related chime in on this before I run off and do something silly by committing this tweak?

Maybe just put it in as a comment line to begin with? Then anyone who needs it can just uncomment it.
Most hosts have FollowSymlinks allow all set in the httpd.conf configuration file for apache. If it is not set, this directive in the .htaccess will override it. The only time it would cause an issue is if a shady or incompetent host has it set to allow none. These morons claim that it is for security reasons so either they have symbolic links to sensitive areas of the server in EACH of their clients home folders OR they have a devastating misunderstanding of what the FollowSymlinks directive actually does. It should be safe to commit it with instructions in a forum thread to put a "#" in front of that line if it is causing problems.
Honestly, this is probably going to be one of the lesser problems for someone trying to run MODx (or any CMS) on such a host.
