index-ajax.php is what lets us do a drop-in, no-configuration-required Ajax Search of the base MODx db tables. Jason can answer more since he created the sucker!

It’s quite simple, it just cleans the request, reads the configuration so you have the db connection info, and loads your external file specified in the request. Then your external file is loaded and has access to the db configuration variables from the config. Then you can use mysql_ functions, create a DBAPI instance, or use XPDO to connect to the db and do you ajax dirty work.
