I review the changelogs, security reports. Keep and eye on

http://github.com/modxcms/evolution to be able to upgrade by patching, hacking and customizing my own version of MODx.
But when I’m set to fix someone else’s install I try to have a bookmarked folder with
all the fixes/problems I can come over.
When they release new versions of MODx they add the newest add-on versions. When the problems are
sorted MODx is a way better product. If they wouldn’t do this, we (community) wouldn’t fix it
and never develop MODx.
But I do understand your complaints.
