The forum repository is reaching its limits

It’s getting harder and harder to keep the Module-Plugin-Snippet repository up to date these days, the way we set it up on a forum thread. Wendy certainly can’t handle this on his own, even with Zi’s help it’s hard to keep up even with people regularly adding links to new stuff...

It’s more and more obvious as time goes by and we are reaching a critical point where lots of things get "lost" or become fairly hard to find. I experience this a lot on the french forum where people ask about a snippet/plugin/module that does this or that, sometimes they event put up a feature request while the code already exists.

A forum thread doesn’t cut it anymore, or else we have to make it editable by whomever has new stuff to add... centralized model can’t work very long IMHO... and the more we wait, the more we’ll have trouble getting all infos together.

After the next release, I would rank this a top priority, what do you think ?

Guillaume has been contacting me about this stuff and I believe he is willing to help with the repository coding. I saw a forum topic where we have a file cabinet snippet which we can use further for this repository listing. I believe Zi is the one who messaged me. What do you think of handing this over to Guillaume, if he has some spare time to do it? Is there any better way to do this? I’m thinking to use our current MODx installation for our main documentation site. From what I believe, the users based is currently connected with SMF, right?

Agreed 100% David! In fact, I’d also like to formalize submission guidelines for official addons that we can organize and present to people in much the same way as Firefox presents extensions or themes, a model that is presented very well by Vanilla add-ons site as well (http://lussumo.com/addons/), as discussed elsewhere.

In fact, I may just create a very simplistic template using TV’s to manage these for now and present them in a format like Vanilla. I mean seriously, it won’t take me anymore work than it will Wendy managing a forum thread to simply upload the official add-ons, read from directories, and present them for download. If I have some spare time tonight, I may look into doing this, i.e. snippet, chunk, module, plugin, class, etc. Any designer-oriented types that have ideas for creating our own unique presentation for MODxtensions or whatever we want to cleverly call it, please speak up...

EDIT (posted before I did): If Guillame wants to build a full-blown file cabinet for this, cool, but it might be easier to just piece it together first to make sure of the operational requirements. It may be that we can accomplish this without a lot of work...

And currently, we do not have any bridge between SMF and MODx (or Flyspray for that matter) on the modxcms.com site.

Great ideas, and while I would tend to side with Jason on using a template with TVs to build something "à la Vanilla", I think Guillaume has the skills and from day one he started contributing I said to myself : "This guy is team material" (so to speak).

I didn’t know he volunteered, but if he offers to code something and if he can complete this in short time, why not ?

Cool, if Guillaume wants to take this on then that’s fine by me. Just let me know so I know whether to start work on this or not - I don’t mind working with Guillaume, I’m happy either way, I just don’t want to overlap on the efforts

Agree, agree, and...err...agree.

But seriously...I’ve looked a bit into some possible solutions to this dillemma and have scratched my head a bit on it. So...if anyone has some good solutions for it, I’m all for it! I’ll of course put in my own two-cents on any given solution though.

Garry, since you already have given this some thoughts, like Zi suggest everyone with ideas could chat with Guillaume and get started, split the work, coordinate... etc. Maybe set up a quick IM conference or a chat on #modx ?

That will be great. I’ll Private Message him today. I’ll ask him whether he seriously have time and willing to code this by himself or not Chat or or a discussion in public forum will be great, by the time he agree on this.
