another download manager went crazy!

22 Feb 2006 -> 59.20 GB (bandwidth used), which causes our zip package download count to reach 37487

How to prevent this kind of happenings ? any ideas ?

yes... install a real resource repository solution that generates dynamic/expiring links for the actual downloads...

integrated with the webusers and offering versioning/add-ons to existing listings... all done dynamically

I’m working on that versioning business...really, I am! Just having trouble wrapping my head around all the error conditions. The more complex things get, the more things can go wrong!

Set up a download CAPTCHA with a one time dynamic link generated by it. Brute force but effective. Real users won’t mind the one extra step, and download managers won’t be able to deal with the dynamic link.

Is that the real download count or is that some form of an attack?

If it is the real download count then I think it is good news.

How can we find out?

It was one IP address on Feb 22. Most likely a download manager that went haywire.
