MODx lingo and architecture overhaul

No... javascript will be a requirement for working with the manager.

OK just curious, we’re getting feedback on the framasoft article page and some comments where making rather harsh criticism on this as an "accessibility issue".

To me, it’s like wondering if you should support very old browsers with no CSS capability, it’s not a real issue. Javascript is built-in modern browsers and XMLHttpRequest is now working in Opera.

And people won’t administrate their website from their cellphones (at least I don’t think so...).

Just getting prepared there, to clarify things for my replies...

Ordinarily, the only javascript I use involves dropdowns or tabs, where the source actually includes all of the code, so readers and other user agents that don’t use css and/or javascript will still access all of the data. However, for the Manager, involving as it is an actual web application, and not just a webpage, or a simple form, is another matter altogether. It could be reworked to have no javascript, but it would seriously cripple its capabilities. I don’t see how such a thing can be totally accessable. It would be like demanding that cars be designed so the blind can drive. We do what we can to help everybody have a chance at a "normal" life, but "politically correct" or not, there are some harsh realities in life that have to be accepted. MODx strongly supports the creation of fully valid and accessable websites. That’s a lot more than most CSM systems do.

Susan, I agree with what you say but I want to make an airtight case to answer those criticism, any input is greatly beneficial : Thanks, your ideas help me a lot in this regard

I am quite set to become one of MODx amabassadeur/advocate/evangelist, which means I have to play devil’s advocate and fully understand whatever ball is thrown at me In this particular matter I had to get some input from you all because I felt my case was not strong enough.

LOL... I can pretty much categorically state that we won’t be officially supporting legacy browsers for the manager.

A possible analogy: if I were to go to on holidate to England, I wouldn’t expect to deal with waiting for hand-cranked maintenance trolley’s to clear out of the Tube, just because it’s technically feasible to go down the tracks and do maintenance that way. It makes sense to be efficient and waste resources.

However, if complaining trolls would like to pay for legacy support by funding its development, we’ll be 100% glad to entertain the project. Until then, our 100% donated time will go to working towards making for a brighter future, and not focusing on the abandoned the past.

More importantly though, the front end websites for end users will support whatever people put into them. If they don’t know how to build accessible websites, then it won’t make accessible websites! And if they do, it will.

Thanks, I see we’re on the same page here ! This gives me some analogies to work with BTW, the Framasoft article has been hit almost 2300 times in 2 days... that’s good, but also the reason I am watching the page, not leaving those negative comments without replies...

As I said, I can’t thank YOU guys enough for bringing us such a great tool. I am finishing my first MODx website for a french travel agency and I must say it took me a few days to build what would have taken me three times more with another CMS.

I already had a modular and flexible CMS with textpattern, but template variables and widgets allowed me to build custom fields so easily and integrate them into the design with incredible speed. And I am only a MODx "beginner" !!! I will of course post the link to this website when I am done.

You helped me gain time, I’ll give it back to the community anytime and as you said if it helps bettering MODx it’s a win-win situation

As for the Framasoft article, we can already see the effect of this, many new french users, and some, like guizmo will no doubt be assets here !
