    I am on the installation page that gives you an option of overwriting the sample website, and installing templates including dropdown menu, chunks, modules etc... there are quite a few installations should all of these be installed?

    Thanks

      You don’t need any of them. The snippets, modules and plugins are very handy to have, though. Wayfinder is used for making dynamic menus; it would be difficult to develop any kind of a site without it. Ditto likewise is used for listing groups of pages, like a "news" or "blog" articles section. It is possible to install all of it manually later, so if you don’t install it now you can add it later if you wish.

      Snippets don’t do anything unless you put their tags in your HTML; plugins work on all pages where they apply, and modules add a new function to the Manager, but have no impact on the site’s front-end. Plugins are easily disabled in the Manager if you don’t like whatever they’re doing.

      The demo site is just that; several pages of content and some of the more common functionality built-in. It’s a good way to start with MODx, since you can see how it’s all done. And you can remove/edit/rename it all later. Just don’t intstall it if you’re upgrading an existing site, as it will overwrite your existing content!

      I always install everything except the demo site.

        Hi and Thanks I went to install everything and there were six fails;

        1) Checking if /assets/cache and /assets/cache/rss directories are writable: FAILED!

        2) Checking if /assets/cache/siteCache.idx.php file is writable: FAILED!

        3) Checking if /assets/cache/sitePublishing.idx.php file is writable: FAILED!

        4) Checking if /assets/images, /assets/files, /assets/flash and /assets/media directories are writable: FAILED!

        5) Checking if /assets/export directory is writable: FAILED!

        6) Checking if /manager/includes/config.inc.php exists and is writable: FAILED!

        How do I go about correcting these errors

        there is mention of installing this file;
        For new Linux/Unix installs, please create a blank file named config.inc.php in the /manager/includes/ directory with file permissions set to 0666.

        I am running off mac osx and my hosting is unix based will I need to do the above?

          You need to use your FTP client program to set these directories to 777, and create an empty file named config.inc.php, upload it to the manager/includes directory, and set its permission to 666.

                I have no idea how your FTP client works.

                  I use filezilla to upload my sites if you know of anybody that’s familiar with it, could you give me an idea as to how you would do this on your ftp client and maybe I might see something similar?
