I’m adding my $0.02 quite late after this discussion, but as a 11-year freelance PHP developer who just discovered MODx and for whom this is the very first CMS I’ve ever even bothered looking into and using, I have to add the fact that the MODx brand was part of what sold me. The impression that I formed within the first 5 seconds of seeing the MODx site is a large component of what propelled me to dig further. Needless to say, MODx itself and all the work that everyone has done was what clinched it for me.
So all I’m really saying is that, at least for me as a PHP developer, the current branding worked.

I got here from etomite (which I lost faith in). Found a comment about MODx, loved the name, loved the code, loved the branding. I reckon Tattoo is a word which is often mish-spelt, and represents something which is ’permanent’, and if you make a mishtake, it’s costly and painful to put right - (speaking as one who had a tattoo go wrong!).

Not really right bothered thought, to be honest. Whatever final branding is chosen / has been chosen, the ’product’ is good, and will succeed on its own merits (and obviously to the credit of the developers) smiley

Well, I think netProphET has good points (btw, nice testimony grin ) , but this has been discussed and Ryan has already clearly stated Tattoo was not going to be changed.

Remember though that MODx will remain the "mainstream" branch (i.e not requiring php5.1+, which is still costy for personnal use), while Tattoo will target the higher end of professionnals (and possibly, if I am not mistaken, the ECM segment).

All in all, branding is a definite plus but as Poggle puts it, the product merits is the core success factor. Personnally, I like the provocative touch of Tattoo, but also the idea of leaving a mark is ambitious and I like it a lot ! All in all, I am not sure one can predict how a brand will be perceived, despite all the $$$ put by companies into marketing studies. I am the kind of guy who believes that a vision is more powerful than any marketing study and numbers.

Tattoo certainly embodies a vision of what web applications should be like in the future, and that’s one reason that I joined the adventure : not only the application itself, but the vision behind it.
