I wanted to make it quicker to get where you were going faster, so I restructured the home page menu a bit:

What does a wiki get us over the support docs ... I’ve always found wikis to be confusing, unintutive and awkward myself!

FAQ is a definite great idea.

I agree with the wiki business. I think the forums offer an excellent ...um... forum for users to share their knowlege. I prefer having the documentation a bit more controlled.

Perhaps we should all do a little research and find a decent wiki-like documentation application. Create a new forum post for an ongoing report of what we’ve found and what we like. I’m sure we can take just about anything out there and plug it into MODx for the purpose of administrating good, solid documentation. Wouldn’t mind a feature that will allow users to extrapolate the documentation and print it out in a nice format....maybe even with some PDF output?

I agree with Ryan on the awkard of most Wiki but I also agree with Jeff on the Wiki part.

I have been through many Wiki and found one is very easy to use very easy to integrate to anything and very flexible and very customizable, and more. Here is a great little DokuWiki that I use and like a lot. You can make it public or member only.

The purpose of the Wiki is to expand the contributing factor to the wider audience and encourage colobration between people. It can be use for anything you want it to be whether it is documentation, FAQ, brainstorming, etc.

Here’s my take on the wikis ... they need constant monitoring for accuracy by a large group of experts... like the PHP documentation. We could functionally achieve the ability to have user additions to the existing documentation, which will be changing with TP4 probably significantly because of the simplification and refactoring, by simply adding an instance of UserComments to every page.

It’d then be like a blog post with comments. If someone comes up with something so wonderful, then it can be added to the actual documentation itself. Quite honestly, there are probably fewer real experts on MODx than I’ve got fingers and toes, and I would rather those experts contribute to making MODx a better, more scalable solution than trolling for errant wiki posts. It’d be just as easy in my mind to create accounts and give them rights to post new doc pages, that are consistent in formatting and that take the current reality and future plans into account.

If we had thousands of users, it’d most likely be a different issue entirely.

From that perspective I agree with you entirely!

Then let’s just find one really good application that is designed specifically for the purpose of writing, managing, and displaying software documentation online. Certainly has to be something out there.

It can do gallery, thumnail, it has wiki like markup, create your own template, choose a specific template for a page, etc.
