Component Library (Templates, Styles, Chunks, Snippets, ...

I was just considering how we want to develop, maintain, and distribute add-on components for MODx that will not be in the core distribution. I'll throw out a couple of ideas and we can go from there.

CVS - I absolutely think we should collaborate on the component development (templates, styles, chunks, snippets, plug-ins, modules, etc.) via the CVS repository -- perhaps just a single repository for any kind of add-on.

Library - I hate the Etomite snippet library; I want to see a little more polish on the distribution of components, in nice tidy packages (.zip / .tar.gz), complete with any required install / usage / customization documentation. If we eventually want to set-up ecommerce capabilities for selling commercial add-on's from the library, that should also be a capability. I suggest something like the news snippet for now, where we can simply add documents to our site for each new add-on in an appropriate category (i.e. folder).

Any other thoughts or ideas in this regards?

I like the Newslisting like snippet. Although the Asset Manager discussed elsewhere would be much cooler.

Absolutely -- do we have a MODx site instance already in prep for when we decide on branding and get ready to release something? If not I might just start preping one in conjunction with this task if it needs to be done... Just let me know.

I s'pose we could use pixelhick.com for the time being... it's running MODx.

I'll offer sottwell.com, I'm not really using it for anything except demos and remote testing; I already have three separate installations of varying versions, one or two more won't hurt at all, especially since I can have up to 250 databases and have more disk space and bandwidth than I can use. I would do something a bit more serious for a home page (if my Modrian isn't acceptable; personally I'm rather fond of it), and add links for various areas, such as an installation with an available Manager login, and an area for HTML downloads, a FAQ, whatever. I have no problem changing/reinstalling/updating; I do it all the time anyway.

Or, if you guys ever decide on a name, I'll pay for a year's worth of hosting on the same company I host with; I have their intermediate package, and am quite pleased with their performance. (http://www.aventurehosting.co.uk) Oh, and their servers are located in Texas!

I'll also offer to handle the management of the site; that's my very favorite passtime.

The file download thing is cool, but i'm getting file not found errors (on spring.zip, for instance).

Also, the modx.zip file wouldn't decompress for me here. Any chance we could get that added back?

Just a quick note guys, as a reseller of hosting space myself (under two different brands :wink: ), I can also provide free hosting for our project. I already have the space should we need it. All my accounts have unlimited features too (unlimited add-on domains, subdomains, email accounts, ftp accounts, MySQL databases, etc.), so space and bandwidth are the only 'cost' to me.

Ditto here. Nine physical servers and I can do an unlimited number of VPSes as well, in case we need to give someone root access and such.

Ok, I take it all back. I know when I'm outclassed. :cry:

Anyway, for now, the downloads issue on my site should be taken care of. As far as files not unzipping; I'm using a Mac to generate the zip files; perhaps there is some kind of compatibility problem? I've never had one between systems, but that doesn't mean that it couldn't happen.

I had the problem and I'll be anything it's a hiccough in my slow dialup connection... I'm on a Mac, too, so there should definitely not be an issue!

Can you give the images a once-over and repost the MODx installer. The major thing is some of the images were corrupt.
