Page-not-found plugin question

Is the exit; statement at the end of the last example on this page http://svn.modxcms.com/docs/display/revolution/Plugins necessary to prevent MODx from doing its usual thing with a bad request, or is it superfluous?

Should be superfluous, though I think this was done in many plugins due to bugs in sendRedirect found in previous releases of MODx (0.9.x series).
