Now I’m getting quite a few decent-sized modX websites under my belt I’m starting to think (worry) "What if the server dies, loses data, and the host can’t provide a backup". Presently I [generally] have very recent copies of client databases from manual backups which I perform as I do updates, but in a few months my first modX sites will be aging and I won’t be regularly updating them (although the client may), hence no recent backups.

Hmm, what I need is a snippet or something which allows the customer to backup their data from a link on the site (when logged in of course). I generally use quickedit for all client accessing of my sites, so I don’t want to use the in-built manager backup facility.
Perhaps a cron job to email the data to the client every month or similar?

What do all you guys use for backups? I know probably many of you "haven’t got around to that yet", but the more organised among you must have some method to backup valuable client data, both database and images/files.

There’s a lot of good information here - http://www.amdbuilder.net/evo/articles/backup-modx but these methods don’t give the client any control. In conjunction with a cron job they just fire off backups to a directory of your choice for you to then manage as you see fit (S3?). I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a way you could move these to some form of cloud storage automatically too.

There are also a couple of MODx modules that perform a similar function (http://modxcms.com/forums/index.php/board,354.0.html).

I use the BkupMODx module. It doesn’t have to be a module; it stands alone and all the module does is provide a handy interface for accessing it. It’s the first thing that gets installed on all sites I personally install nowadays.

Susan, so this works fine with v1.0.4? It’s listed to work with vers up to .9.6.3? I’ll install it and give it a go. Thanks

Dan_s8, thanks for that, that’s actually the article I read directly prior to starting this topic. Has some good info but I was hoping to find something that slotted into the modx system nicely, BkupMod may be the thing. Cheers
