Performance via Stats as a Plugin

The logging is slowing down MODx. Most folks leave it on by default. The tables grow really large too as a result. And the logging really isn’t all that great... very basic stats...

As a proactive measure, I’d like to suggest we rip the current stats and it’s seven DB tables and create a plugin to handle stats. I think we should offer three initially:

• Google Analytics - this is really cool and now running on the support site. Great data. It only requires adding a bit of JS to the top of each page.
• Slimstats (39Kb .zip download) - a derivative of Shaun Inman’s ShortStats (the precursor to Mint) that offers some pretty cool enhancements and data over our current stats, all wrapped in a single table. Well actually two tables if you want to add in about 550Kb worth of IP-to-location data with country codes, etc. (the linked version does not do the IP lookups). Learn more  about Slimstats
• External stats link - simply a way to login to a password protected directory with your external stats application like awstats or webalizer.

FYI, Google Analytics was formerly Urchin statistics. A couple of months ago it sold for $199 per month. It’s really powerful stuff!

Sounds good to me. I’m willing to throw together a Google Analytics plugin. Should just take a few minutes.

What would be nice is to also have a way to create a statistics link in the manager via the plugin.

It’s possible but I’m not too sure we want to mess with the current menu system as it varies from layout to layout.

Let’s save that for the rewrite of the manager... Adam file it away and don’t forget to bring it up!
