I don’t know much about phpGACL but I think it should be similar or close to it as it will allow "fine-grain" acces. What we want to do however is create a system that works best with our existing enivornment. It should work/imporve on our existing architechture.

phpGACL is a super-robust and time tested user/role/groups system. It also happens to be what Mambo uses. Given that, though, the setup and nomenclature they use is terrible at best, because it’s an all-things-to-all-solutions solution. Just mapping the terminology and tweaking the user interface for managing ACLs would be a huge step in the right direction if we get serious about it.
