Direct and Redirect Link options

One issue that has come up with clients when using internal link documents to represent recurring hyperlinks to both internal and external URL’s, is that the actual URL shown in the status bar is that of the document id or alias, rather than the eventual redirect destination. I was thinking how best to solve this, while still taking advantage of a single link representation, and I’m wondering if adding an option to the link document type to use the internal redirect or an alternative direct linking method (e.g. [~123~] renders the destination URL, rather than the URL to the document representing the link) would be a good solution. Any other thoughts on this?

yes, sorry, I am talking about web links -- I’d like to use them to organize and store sets of links (a la blogrolls) but be able to reveal the actual link URL in the rendered page -- I think this is important for search engine rankings as well, since links to other sites, when hidden by our web links’ aliases, probably don’t help anything (since it appears to be a link internal to the site)
