Well, I’ve gone over to the dark side and installed Revo. Actually, Bluehost made it really easy with SimpleScripts. Now all I have to do is figure out what to do with it. Four language shopping site, with a gallery and voting on the images. I’m off with a bang wink http://petshop.sottwell.com

rolleyes rolleyes Resetting the admin password, the old password field and the two new password fields all only show bullets as you enter the password (rather painful when one is dyslexic). Then it pops up a window with a message about your new password being ... and displays the password in plain text. So what’s the point of using password fields there if it’s just going to be displayed on screen anyway?

I see you are already shedding some light on the scene.

May not be dark for long.
At least you get more of a screen with Bluehost than regular Revo.

Hi Susan; good question. Can you file that improvement suggestion here? http://bugs.modx.com/

Tried using a resource for the css; found out I had a boo-boo in my .htaccess file after I gave up on it and switched to a file (it wasn’t just the style.css resource, it was all FURLs, which I didn’t discover until I created another resource and installed Wayfinder). I’m used to working on my local environment, where I have several MODx (Evo) installation all in subdirectories, so the .htaccess has the RewriteBase /subdir line. But here, on Bluehost, I have a real subdomain set up and the line remains RewriteBase /

So far the only problems I’ve run into have involved fiddling around with .htaccess rules (to force www.domain to just domain both in my main site and the subdomains) and setting up the hosting configuration to use a custom php.ini file to turn off magic_quotes_gpc. No problems with MODx itself. And I have a nice new template installed. Now comes the headscratcher... figuring out the best way to deal with multiple languages. Lexicons? Contexts? Tiger and bears oh my? YAMS was so nice undecided And I suppose I’d better create another admin-type user for my partner...

Wayfinder was pretty simple to install, once I did some clicking around (reminiscent of when Hero’s Quest first came out with full mouse support, no more typing "pick up rock" and "throw rock", every screen had tons of neat things to click on - although all three of my boys learned to type well with the original command-line version).

So I clicked on things... first moused over the main menu items, and found "Package Management" under System. Checked the "Providers" tab to make sure it was finding modxcms.com, which it indeed does. So back to the Packages tab. Hmm... I don’t want to just "Download" the package, I want to "Add New Package", and while I’ve read in the forums about downloading things and installing them from the local download, I’m not ready to get into that yet. So "Add New Package" it is.

Now it asks me how I want to fetch the package, and it’s Select a Provider, Add New Provider, or Search Locally (probably what I’d need to do afterwards if I had chosen to "Download" a package earlier). So Select a Provider is the option I want. The next window gives me a select drop-down which after a bit of spinning offered me modxcms.com (with another button for adding a new provider if I don’t like what I see).

The resulting window is mostly a relatively irrelevant listing of "most popular" and "newest additions", which contrary to expectation is just a list, not links for installing. Those installation links are in the left-hand menu structure. I guessed MODx Add-Ons and that indeed turned out to be the one I wanted. Then I figured out I had to double-click, or click on the little arrow icon to open the folder. "Menu" was the next obvious choice, and this opens up a nice form with a choice of UltimateParent or Wayfinder. There are two buttons, Details and Download. After the previous choice of downloading a package or adding a new package, I wasn’t real confident about that, but since Download was the only obvious choice at this point I went for it. Turns out that did what I wanted, resulting in a return to the original "Packages" tab of the Package Management screen, now with Wayfinder listed and a button to install it. So I clicked again, and now it’s installed (and actually shows up in the Elements tree under Snippets!

I agree that the Package manager thing is a bit counter-intuitive. But if you install from the cms.modx.com provider, it will handily tell you when a new version is ready (it changes to a red ’Yes’) and then you can simply right-click on a package name, and select ’Check For Updates’ and it will do the grunt work for you. That feature alone is surely worth a hundred copy-pastes in Evo?

And you’ll get to this, but the Quip settings window will open and re-open if you install several packages at once. And sometimes the whole screen will need a kick /refresh.

My only useful Revo tip - and I don’t know why more isn’t made of this as I only found out via one of Shaun’s Vimeo entries - and I’m not sure if it did this under Evo, but when you are editing/creating a resource, you can simply click and drag a snipppet (or any element) into the content area (or there are other areas that it will work as well) into the content area, and it will reveal the default property page. Which is really convenient if RTFM is down, or you just want a quick reminder....

Similarly, click-and-dragging a resource or a file will bring the resource ID, or the file path into whatever content area you’re editing....

Don’t rush me! I’m still not all that sure I really want to do this! I’m a 60-year-old Revo virgin, so be gentle grin
