I have not installed modX yet, but I made an empty database for the time being and would like to know if I can populate it afterward - that is to say, does modX require actual data, or only a place to store data as you build the site. I am not certain exactly what I need at this point and would like to add fields to the database as I build the site.

MODx will automaticly make all the tables it needs within your database. So an empty database is perfectly fine.

If you want to use custom tables for extra features you’re coding yourself, just make sure the table names don’t clash with the tables MODx uses... in general you can be safe if you use a different prefix (eg custom_) from the prefix MODx uses (eg cms_).

Just make sure the database you created has a user attached to it, and that the user has the proper permissions for the database.

One big issue that catches quite a lot of "newbies" is that with shared hosting, the server often adds a string to the database name you specified, such as "abc123_mydatabase", so if you think your database name is "mydatabase" it will fail, since the actual name is "abc123_mydatabase". Make sure you paid very close attention to the final name of the database you created.
