Hi neonaan,
Welcome to the world of modx.
For the changing pictures you could simply use some jquery to achieve that.
As for the extras etc the main ones that people use are wayfinder for Navigation, Jot for comments / blog, webloginpe for members areas, Ditto, and eform however it would really depend what you actually want to achieve on your site.
Modx can do anything as it is a framework so if it can be created on the web then modx can handle it.

I prefer to use background images wherever I can, so I have a simple bit of PHP code (known in the MODx world as a "snippet") to grab a random image from a given folder, then I have a small <style> block in the template’s head where I use it:
<style type="text/css">
div#top{background:#fff url(assets/images/top/[!RandomImage!])top right no-repeat;}
</style>
The way that MODx works is that the [!RandomImage!] snippet code is evaluated and its output placed where the snippet tags are. So it returns a random filename from the assets/images/top folder.
