Hi there! Quick introduction from me. I’ve been using a bespoke framework CMS for some time now but unfortunately it’s not something I can deploy myself and has to be on my client’s servers. This is not a problem with jobs for them but recently I have been in need of an option that can be deployed to my own web space or to other clients.

Having gotten used to that previous CMS pretty well, and having designed the front end of it myself, I was a bit distraught that no other CMS seemed to offer the flexibility I wanted. As a front-end guy it’s imperative to me that I can deploy flat XHTML / CSS into various templates quickly and easily.

Having read Mary’s website and newbie intro to MODx I am confident that it works in pretty much the same way and is actually quite a bit more powerful than what I am used to working with (which is great news!)

My only doubt is over e-commerce integration. Foxycart seems to be the recommendation. How easy is this to implement (for someone with limited PHP knowledge) and can anyone from the UK vouch for it?

    Cheers

    Jase

Just realised there is a sticky for intros. Apologies!

FoxyCart is easy to integrate into MODx without being a coder and regular paypal is now a payment option for the UK.

I was using ecwid but found it to be infuriating to try and style it the way I wanted. Decided to gave Foxy Cart a go today and have been delighted with it so far.

Would be nice to be able to list items by price... Probably over-reaching there though.

Just a Ditto call sorted by whatever Price TV you have configured. No problem at all wink

              Cheers folks! smiley

You’re right Brett, sorting by price is dead easy!

The next thing would be to give the user the option to sort by price ascending, descending and by date added.

How would I approach this? Is it straightforward to achieve?

              Thanks

Check ditto.modxcms.com for all of Ditto’s fun stuff. I think the short answer is to use the request extender and pass in the parameters you want: sortBy and sortDir. Probably best to start a new thread in the Ditto sub-forum if you need help there. It can be slightly tricky between the cached/uncached snippet call and making sure you understand how the Ditto ID works (which you need to prefix to your GET parameters), but once you get it it should work pretty well.

                Nice looking site, btw.

Thanks for all the help guys. I’m getting there in a half-assed kinda way with how I would ideally like the shop to behave. I’m treating this site as a bit of a testing ground to what I can offer in the future. It’s all baby steps at the moment but every little breakthrough feels like a major achievement and another weapon in the armoury.

I can’t compliment you enough on the tool that you have given me here. I’m normally a template builder / designer. I like to start from scratch because I like control over every visual aspect. With MODx I get that but with a bucket load of other great stuff.

Haven’t been this enthused in ages and just wish I knew more php now and had the time to learn it! smiley

I’ll post any further newbie questions in the appropriate forum.

Thanks also for building this CMS and getting me enthusiastic about learning new stuff for the first time in a while.

What issues do you have? Actually, Ecwid can generate the same "Add to cart" buttons as FoxyCart.
I’d love to get any feedback on how we can improve our shopping cart. Thanks in advance!

The main issue I had was the sheer scale of the CSS file. Locating the relevant styles was taking me ages.

There seemed to be some inline styling too which I had no control of?

I also wasn’t keen on the use of tables for the category buttons which made made designing my own style buttons a painstaking task.

Don’t get me wrong, I think ecwid is a great product with some really cool features, the image scaling and the ability to drag to cart are impressive. I’m a bit of a control freak though and Foxycart allows me to build from scratch which just suits me better.
