Meet the Toad

Hiya, I’m Anne, I’m 38, I hail from the Big Blue Nation of Kentucky. Lo-ah-vul, y’all. Yes I am a UK fan (that is the University of KY, not United Kingdom, sorry Brits) I’ve been a designer for a while, working for a decade, freelancing since 2001 with brief stints into square jobs that always left me yearning for my home office, my cigarettes-while-I-work and my slippers.

Not that I’m not willing to do the "square job" thing, I am. I just haven’t met the One yet. I need to be matched on 27 different levels of compatibility.

I love Jelly Helm, Saul Bass, Jonathan Harris, The Wizard of Ads (Roy Williams), the Eisenbrothers and Andy Clarke. I have a love/hate relationship with HubSpot. Looking these people up is highly worth it if you do not know who they are. I listen to piano music while I work mostly. I work a lot. I really hate posers and jargon and lingo and buzzwords. I really love communication. I read voraciously. Fast food McWebDesign makes me twitchy.

I have been known to hit F5 on the ThinkGeek fortune page for hours, laughing maniacally, when I’ve had a few too many billable hours that week. I am a Gilmore Girls and Doctor Who (David Tennant) and Top Gear addict.

Web 2.0-style graphics ain’t really me. I can do them but it just ain’t me. I notice lots of them around and hope they don’t go the way of jelly shoes because it is a cool style. I’m also not ..whatcha call it. Urban, in feel. Nope. Not me. Tend to be very conceptual. I struggle a lot with IE. I hate IE.

What I want to do is to tell the truth about the client as loud as I can. I want to reflect -their personality- and their vision/goal/objective as truthfully and positively as possible. So hopefully you’ll see one of my sites and then feel like you know the person before you meet them but you’ll also really like them. I try to be other-centered.

I’m still learning, always learning. I think typography is key, it is voice. um. ...what else? my site is www.redtoadmedia.com. I work on it in 15 minute increments between other things so if you see some glaring error, tell me!! I know my poor toad looks like one of the ninja turtles but he has panache, so I’m okay with that.

Have recently been through a very rough personal season (my dad died) and am more somber than normal as a result, but I wanted to let you all know who this weird "diary of a noob" chick was. I’m hoping to stick around, be involved more, contribute, (tithe!!!) but first I have to catch up and get myself back on track.
