I am an old school web developer use to using php scripts integrated into my custom layout but would like the wonderful features that these new CMS packages are offering. I have been looking since 8pm and it is now 12am and after looking at e107, opencms, phwhwwc(some gibberish like that) and nucleus and after looking through forums I am just loving the energy here at modx my concern is how hard would my current layout http://www.angrygamers.org be to convert to modx style template? From what I read they are all possible its just you have to learn a whole new code I think it is to convert it to modx code format to become a template ?

To create a template, simply go to Elements->Manage Elements, and in the Templates tab and create a new template. Open one of your original html files in a text editor and copy/paste the whole thing into the template field. Give it a name and save it.

Now you replace the main content text with the [*content*] tag, and any other content (such as menus) with other MODx tags, and the content of the documents you create will be inserted into the content section of your template when a page is requested. The original HTML structure remains intact.

no freakin way in 45 minutes after install i’ve already accomplished more then i did 2 hours with drupal. I can’t thank you guys enough. I am noticing their is a {longtitle} variable so i am guessing there is a shortone as well? Along with perhaps a {date} variable basically I am trying to think how I am gonna do 3 seperate link variables as well as 2 of the same news variables only in different styles meaning the main long news header on the content section and then in the top right box it does a 3-4 listing of the news. How do I specify how many news elements can be shown with the [content] variable?

pagetitle is the short version (it’s the Title field in the Manager). Those are content fields of a resource and they’re displayed with [*fieldName*] in Evolution (and [[*fieldName]] in Revolution).

All the fields on the Create/Edit resource panel are available for display and you can use any of them for any purpose but, if they are not enough for you, you can create more by adding template variables. As for dates, you have: createdon, publishedon, and editedon. smiley

For displaying lists of articles or blog posts or whatever you’ll want to use the Ditto snippet.

By the way, feel free to go poke around in my site’s manager and see what stuff looks like.

Sleeping on the couch tonight the customization the power the capabilities are just over-whelming, especially with the ability to create your own variables.
I had actually just stumbled on the ditto snippet so thank you for confirming I am on the right track
