With my own site firmly behind schedule: as friends asking me to do things always overrides my own willpower, we finally made www.bfenthusiasts.com live with all its new changes.

It was (if you look at archive.org) quite a bit of a mish-mash. The main part of the site used to be the forums, which used vBulletin, plus some static HTML in Frontpage (my friend not so keen on the whole web technologies thing).

With retaining vBulletin just about the only requirement, it is now ModX powered integration with mediawiki, vbulletin and ModX all sharing the same user base, and ModX providing all the menus and support for the other two.

A lot of plugins and integration was necessary, but I am very pleased with the result.

It must be said that very little of it would be possible without all the tremendous support from you guys here. What has really come across is the pride given to you all when you can answer someone’s question accurately. There have been innovative suggestions to things I’m not sure would be of benefit to others, and for that I am very grateful. I am convinced that the greatest asset of ModX is it’s excellent community (including the developers and officials!).

We have tried to cover the top of the iceberg at http://www.bfenthusiasts.com/about-us/thanks-to.html

Now, in January I set myself a September deadline for my own website. With two months to go, will that still be possible? Given that I hoped to write my own ModX compatible forum engine in that time, I think not.

That’s it. And mediawiki has the same thing built in there. Also, there’s some random header snippets pulled in along with some other customisations.

Although it did break the login script mid-upgrade! Always disable plugins when upgrading - Doh!

Very nice site! I love the way you seamlessly integrated your other software with MODx. It’s a great inspiration to others.
I'm learning more about MODx all the time and loving it.

The menu isn’t stable in FF 3.5/OS X; for example I hover "Community", and then move the mouse down into the sub-menu and move it to the left, it loses it and goes back to the home page submenu. It’s fine, however, in Safari.

(I certainly don’t mean to denigrate the site overall; it is indeed an excellent piece of work!)

I thought I had tried it in FF3.5/OSX (I’m afraid I primarily used Safari). However, I expect many of these reports to come rolling in! I’ll take a look this evening smiley The dropline is the one discussed in one of my questions here, all CSS and quite simple. However, it’s a little difficult to use, so one day it might become a javascript one.

Thanks for all the great comments. Note that the wiki is called "Nostalgia" if you’re looking on the site, as it is primarily for historical information.

I must say that the hardest part was trying to force the various IEs to behave as all the other browsers did, especially as "fixing" it for IE often meant breaking it for others.

The feeds on the home page use FeedX, Ditto and PHCResults (Page Hit Counter). Plugins into the various systems, mostly written/customised by me, allow the forum login to be used across the site, logging users in to ModX and other things automatically. Most of the other features are provided through native ModX functionality, or through standard snippets (page rating, ditto...).

Me too! It’s gonna take a while, and will provide only the basic functionality needed, but should be extensible. It will be something of a bridge for my site until the ModX one we discussed below is ready.
