Hi MODx people... my name is Chris and last week I discovered MODx. I am a 6 year U.S. Air Force veteran (airframe mechanic). Got out of the military 4 years ago and graduated from University of North Florida last December and have been an asp.net web developer/designer for almost 3 years now. A few months ago I realized that I wouldn’t be getting paid the money that I had anticipated due to our lovely economy. Although I planned on doing work on the side eventually, I felt I should start just a bit early considering the unpredictable future and student loans payments just around the corner.

I am fairly new to the open source scene, which has grown on me big time. I started by researching and googling this stuff which lead me to an endless amount of technology at my disposal: php, mysql, ruby on rails, django, cakephp, zend, drupal, LAMP, etc, etc... way too many to choose from. languages, cms’s, and frameworks all over the place. CodeIgnitor caught my interest at first. such a great php framework and extremely intuitive. but i gotta be honest, i LOVE design, and like developing... so my addiction to googling this crap continued. then i found Joomla. i couldn’t believe all the plugins and features, and it introduced me to the cms world. bought a book, made a site, but still felt like there had to be something out there more geared toward a designer that knows how to program (which Joomla IS NOT lol). This lead me to Wordpress, which is a great blog platform and really not that bad of a cms. but then i started noticing the name ’MODx’ showing up in forums and blogs, with nothing but good things said about it... wish i’d have noticed this sooner.

This is such a great cms and framework. It is completely opposite of what pays the bills (asp.net). I have an open mind to web technology and i gotta say... asp.net has its place. the .net framework is very powerful and can make some great enterprise apps. but for making the average website, the complexity and cost of hosting just doesn’t make it an ideal solution.

Anyway, I just wanted to introduce myself and say thank you to the entire MODx team and this community for making such an invaluable tool. I hope to become a MODx expert sooner than later and I will contribute to the cause... no doubt about that.

    -Chris

Hey Chris welcome aboard. Very glad to have you here. Make sure to check out Revo and take a peek at some of the framework things it offers (a very robust API and toolset we think will surprise lots of folks). Looking forward to you joining the effort to make MODx better. All feedback is desired and appreciated. laugh

Thanks for the friendly welcome!  I did see mention of the new Revo coming soon, so I tried to install it last week but got some errors (can’t remember what they were)... but I figured I would get my hands dirty with the current version and get comfortable with modx before I try diving into an alpha.

I was just about to ask for news of a beta release date, but to avoid being ’that guy’ who asks a question that’s been answered a million times already I did a search, and found this:
            http://codingpad.maryspad.com/2009/05/31/modx-revolution-200-beta-1-now-available/

I feel pretty fortunate to have found modx at such good timing.  I’ll be dl’ing the Revo beta this evening and I’ll put in my rookie 2 cents after I take it for a run.

I just realized you’re the guy that wrote the pdf on the wayfinder menu. man not only did it help me create a pretty sweet jquery menu, it also helped me out tremendously on the modx concepts as a whole... like blocks, snippets, etc. imo, it’s a great starting point for modx in general. thanks kongondo for the help.
