Don’t know where exactly to post this sad

I am trying to install Evo 1.0.4 for a new client using a .ie domain. We have purchased the domain name but it has not yet been confirmed by the Irish Domain Name Registry (a bit of paperwork involved here). In the meantime, I am able to access the hosting server, upload files and preview the site on http://preview1.reg365.net/~mydomainname.ie/.

This works fine if I upload html files. However, if I am trying to install MODx by going to the http://preview1.reg365.net/~mydomainname.ie/modx folder, it simply throws out the ~mydomainname.ie bit and goes to page http://preview1.reg365.net/modx - and this obviously then doesn’t exist and therefore won’t install. I checked with the hosting company and they are telling me it has something to do with MODx’s script throwing out the domain name bit. Is this because of the ’~’ symbol in the URL? Is there anything we can do about this?

I have had this issue before and that time simply created the client’s MODx database in a folder on my own domain and after their domain name was resolved moved everything over to that. But that still involves a bunch of extra work like importing and exporting sql datbases, changing file path structures etc. which could be avoided if I could simply install MODx where it’s supposed to go in the first place.

    Any help appreciated! Thanks.

Hi, I have installed MODx into hosting where the unpropogated URL contained the tilde, actually quite a few times, so generally it is possible. I simply adjust the .htaccess to use that for the time being for friendly URL’s (and making sure I have a good base URL in my templates), and then when the URL is propogated, I can take out the special lines in .htaccess, and I’m good to go.

You may actually have a URL on the host similar to http://myhost.com/~rivendell or the like, so the last part points to a particular folder on the server.

I would check with your host (and possibly the very first sign-up email they sent you) to see if there’s another way to look at your new site besides that preview thing, similar to what I coded above. Until they code their preview facility to handle .ie, it looks like that simply won’t work.

      Hope that helps. Dave

        HI,
As Dave mentions - add the tilde etc. to the front of your friendly url line in the .htacces file and it will find it - done it a few times - if you have WHM re-seller panel you can use the ’list accounts’ feature and just click the IP address and you will see the site as it will look whilst waiting for it to resolve. Hello,

You can absolutely install MODx using a temporary domain name containing the tilde. I’ve got roughly 70 installs to confirm it works just fine and that isn’t even counting upgrades or installs for my clients. The install should be done before renaming ht.access to .htaccess. I would suggest leaving this disabled during the entire development process and enable it (and FURLs if desired) once the domain name is operational.

You can also try using the full address: http://servername.com/~username/modx/install/index.php (remove modx/ if install not in modx folder). In some cases I have seen servers get picky about excluding the index.php part.

Thank you everybody for your help and suggestions. Appreciated as always! In the end, I tried out AMDbuilder’s suggestion and added index.php when typing in the URL for the install and it worked immediately. One headache less! smiley
