I’m a freelance web developer in the UK and I’m putting together some ideas for a project I want to get off the ground and decided a CMS would be so much easier and quicker than writing something bespoke.

I only heard about MODx earlier today and I’m already hooked on the features list, the interface and well... everything!

I’ve tried others in the past (Joomla, CMS Made Simple) and more recently Drupal, DotNetNuke and even contemplated Wordpress but MODx is seriously the only one that’s ticked pretty much all the boxes.

Hopefully I’ll be here for a while grin

Great choice! You’ll see that the MODx Community makes MODx better than most regardless of its incredible featureset. If you can’t figure something out you’ll get lots of friendly advice from the wonderful people that steward the new and the old alike.

BTW: How did you learn of MODx? I am part of the Marketing group here and I like to find these things out. smiley

MODx seems to be getting more and more popular with developers. The others all seem to be too restrictive for general development purposes; while Joomla may suit one client it doesn’t suit another at all, so the developer is constantly in a scramble to find just the right system for each and every client.

MODx, on the other hand, is more flexible and allow itself to be adjusted to just about any requirement.

It’s still young, and the growing body of developers is constantly submitting more and more custom additions to the already long list of resources.

And I’m sure the 0.9.7 rewrite will see a major jump in heavy-duty applications for it.

Smashingred - it was from a post on the Internet Business forums.

Sottwell, regarding the new releases has there been any major incompatibility issues with regards to modules, themes and any general modifications to the platform? Just so I know what to look out for before I start hacking about smiley

            Joff,

To answer your question posed to Susan, there will be some incompatibilities with some addons. Themes will need their tags upgraded but there is a built in migration scheme for 0.9.7. Even though it is a near total rewrite it will be familiar and friendly but more powerful, more extensible and more flexible than it is at 0.9.6.x. The API will be completely documented and and cleaned so that hacks to the core will be entirely a thing of the past. In addtion the MODx core and its DB layer have been decoupled as MODx will be using xPDo which will make it easy for MODx to extend into other DB systems other than MySQL like MSSQL or PostGRE.

I am sure that someone more technical than me like OpenGeek could better explain it but from what I understand it will be a relatively painless migration.

            Cheers and all the best,

            Jay

Cheers Jay, no need for a more technical explanation - what you’ve said will do me fine!
