This is my "hobby that may turn into a business" site ( http://go4it2day.com/ ). For a few years I have been hosting low volume sites for friends and helping with site design occasionally which is what originally drove me to use e107 and now MODx. If I recommend MODx to friends I should use it myself!

The site uses an open source template called Level2 by FreeCSSTemplates ( http://www.freecsstemplates.org/preview/level2 ) which I converted to use Wayfinder (no small task for me!). I added Mootools javascript to some elements for tool tips and added Active Calendar ( http://freshmeat.net/projects/activecalendar/ ) ( http://www.micronetwork.de/activecalendar/ ) to the site in the all the sidebars except the Home Page.

Adding Active Calendar was easier than expected after I found this post in the MODx forums: http://modxcms.com/forums/index.php?topic=17087.0 That post told me that krypto was integrating Active Calendar into a site and had the same calendar navigation problem I was having. Thanks to OpenGeek for the answer and fix!

I still need to work on the calendar css (I’m using a modified Active Calendar supplied css file) and may move to a larger format but I’m happy with the features so far. I really like that I can store events in a MySQL table and use the calendar events to link to internal or external pages. I can insert javascript in the links for poupup windows which is also a plus for me. The other open issue is that I haven’t built a secure frontend editor for calendar events so I’m using phpMyAdmin to add/change events in the meantime. When my MODx skills improve I’ll circle back to create and upload an Active Calendar contribution to the repository for others to use.

Google Events uses ActiveCalendar for its calendar output and the Google Calendar for the backend.

I was halfway through my Active Calendar integration when a search turned up activecalendar.php in Google-Events. I’ll have to take a closer look at how that is implemented. Thanks for the tip.

I decided to use the phpMyEdit generator for the frontend editor of the calendar events. The frontend editor is embedded on a secure page that is restricted to an single web user by Web User / Document group links. Overall I’m pleased with the ease of using outside tools with MODx. Trying to do this with e107 would have caused me much brain damage. I’m off to clean up the calendar CSS later this week.

That sound like a cool idea, I would like to know more about doing something like this.

Can I assume that you asking about phpMyEdit and not how to hide a page for a single web user?

I usually install phpMyEdit under the snippet directory. phpMyEditSetup.php is a script that asks for the details of the table you want to generate an editor page for. It’s output is a php file that has css script info at the top and php table manipulation code below. I usually split the css off and copy it into a chunk and the php is copied into a snippet although you could use the file intact with a snippet "include" call. After that at a minimum I add 1 line to the top of the snippet right after the intro comments that identifies the hidden page:

                $opts[’page_name’] = ’NameOfPage.html’; //I’m using FURLs

I also modify the line at the end of the php in the snippet:

                require_once ’assets/snippets/pme/phpMyEdit.class.php’; //location of phpMyEdit class file

To use this I include the chunk and snippet in a columnless page since the output can be quite wide and can break margins if you don’t make additional format modifications. There are a lot of other mods you can make that are in the phpMyEdit documentation and on their forums but this should get you going.

Thanks. I took a peak at phpMyEdit, this is a cool solution. The only thing I did not figure out was how to so complex edits including TVs. Initially I was thinking that phpMyEdit was a file editor not a MySQL table editor, looks like an interseting tool to know about, thanks.
