I’m going to use MODx for all my sites now and I think we should write an unwritten rule that for every commercial site that’s made with MODx a small donation should be made.
No on "should", a big no on "writing an unwritten rule".
The general idea is sound - of a user donating to MODx in proportion to the number of commercial sites it has helped him launch.
But to make it the rule stops it being a voluntary donation and starts it being a tithe.
There are of course many ways to donate to MODx - time, add-ons, ideas, help and finally money.
If you do feel that you are getting more out of MODx than you are putting in, then by all means spread your earnings about - donate to MODx, sponsor individual add-on development, and generally enable more stuff to get done.
Actually, there may be something of a benefit to the commercial website in donating to MODx on its behalf, as it would get the site listed on MODxCMS.com; it is possibly "better value" to have 6 websites listed under $100 than one programmer listed under $300. But as I say I would not want to make it compulsory.
