You may want to try upgrading to 1.0.5 and see if the updated version of TinyMCE corrects the problem.

TinyMCE glitches are always a pain! I have a strong love/hate relationship with the plugin. I am totally OK with working without it. But my clients depend on it. This is a scenario that many of us face.
I had some strange TinyMCE issues while upgrading from an older version of Evo to 1.0.4 and then to 1.0.5. Its always some silly gotcha.
Is this site live? There are a couple of trusted MODx coding types that might be able to look at it for you. I feel your frustration though!

If this is happening to several sites could you give us more details? Do the sites all share the same host, if so who is the host? Can you tell us more about the hosting as well.

The sites are separate installs of modx but all with the same hosting provider.
These days I use a template database of a basic site (with all my custom menus / snippets etc) for efficiency and then switch the database using the Install / Advanced option.
I haven’t had this issue before when starting a database from scratch with this hosting provider, so don’t believe the host would be affecting it.
FYI - I am not sure if this is relevant but on checking PHP MyAdmin:
+ the MYSQL table collation is "latin1_swedish_ci"
+ the MySQL localhost > MySQL connection collation is "utf8_general_ci"
