I created a new directory under the ASSETS folder by right-clicking and then clicking make directory. I named the folder IMAGES, but it does not show under the file directory tree. I can see it using my FTP program, but I cannot open it to or add files to it. What am I doing wrong?

By default the files and directories you make by using the manager get certain permissions attached..... which may lead to your own ftp user being shut out from them if it’s a different (apache) user.

You can change the default permissions in the system settings, or modify your apache groups to make php use the same group as your ftp.

(I have no idea how the latter actually works tho, sorry :p)

You may want to install or request your host install phpsuexec. I think mark is correct in that the issue is permission related, the folder being created by apache instead of your user. phpsuexec will cause php to run as your user which should improve security and reduce issues like that. It will also cause 500 errors should you have files/folders with more permission than 644/755 so beware if you use 666/777 for file/folder permission you will have errors. This can be fixed quickly via shell.

          Hello,

I would be great to have a kind of "permissions table" in the official doc (http://svn.modxcms.com/docs/display/revolution/MODx+Revolution) specifying for each folder/file what is the minimum permissions required...
It’s not very clear, you have some infos during install (like folder/file must be writable OK or NOT) but "writable" is sometimes not enough, I image some of other need to be only "read-execute", etc...

I think it would be very helpful for who is not familiar with permissions and rights...

          (just my 2cts..)
          Cheers

I was able to use my FTP program to create and change permissions of new folders to 755 and everything worked with no problem.
