    Hello!

We’re looking for a new platform for our online school and we’re currently considering Caribou CMS. http://www.cariboucms.com/

Our current system is a bit messed up, so we’d like to start from scratch. I’ve been following MODx for some time now, and I keep wondering if it would be a good base/foundation for our project. One thing I’m concerned about is that whatever platform we use, I want it to be something that we can expand and modify if/when we decide to add more features.

As I mentioned, we’re currently thinking about going with Caribou CMS. It’s built specifically for subscription-based membership sites and as it is now, it does a lot of what we would need. (You can see some of the features here: http://www.cariboucms.com/competition-comparison .) We’re hesitating to use it, though, for a few reasons.

    Here’s my question:

What would it take (time/money) to turn MODx (Revo I imagine) into something that could do the following?

    users:
    -admin
    -learner
    -teacher

I’m basing this list on the features Caribou CMS has listed here http://www.cariboucms.com/competition-comparison and here http://www.cariboucms.com/features/ .

-manage content: MODx can do that now
-manual member signup (done by admin): I’m sure MODx can handle that now.
-automatic member signup: I’m sure MODx can handle that now.
-content queue for restricted staff members: ?
-PayPal website payments pro integration: ?
-store where members (only members) could purchase “credits” (these credits are used for purchasing live tutoring sessions)...a registered user would need to be able to purchase credits and then the number of credits would appear in the users account within MODx
-members-only content (when members sign up, they are automatically put into one group and can access certain pages or directories)...once they pay for a subscription, they are moved to another group and have access to other pages or directories…once they stop paying and their subscription expires, they are automatically moved to another group
-members would need to be able to be part of more than one group at a time and have more than one subscription at a time (one for math, one for history for example)

Basically, to start off with, I would like something like Caribou CMS, but we don’t need everything. We don’t need an affiliate system to start off with. We don’t need several payment gateways. PayPal Website Payments Pro would work for us. The content management part is already part of MODx. The subscription part is the most important part for us right now. ( http://www.cariboucms.com/features/subscriptions/ )

The reason I’m asking about this with MODx is because the developer of Caribou said he is no longer able to develop and customize Caribou for customers. He used to do that and advertises it on his site, but it looks like they’ve stopped doing custom deployments of Caribou. Also, I’d like to have 100% access to our code.

(We’ll take care of the design.)

So…what would you charge for a project like this?

    Cheers!

    Sammy
