the feature I would like to have is: to collate several pages to a single page, ie. a newsletter - without having to write a line of template code! I thought up a way to do it in the backend: create a new page, that is just the output of all the children’s contents. Then *link* entries into this container page.

I would break the work down to:
1a) Make the frontend mirror the ordering of a container’s children in the backend tree view
1b) Make ordering children in the backend tree view easy
    2) Add the possibility to link items to another place in the tree (because that way they know their parents titles, and the newsletter page can display that).

now, is this a reasonable procedure at all? and how much would it be?

All those can be handled by built in snippets and modules.

      1) You can list the items in the same order as in the back end by sorting to ’menuindex’ with either DItto or Wayfinder snippets.
1b) This can be done with the DocManager module. Select the sort documents tab, click on the parent of the section you want to sort and simply drag-n-drop the documents to the order you want.
      2) This can be handled by using a weblink type document. Weblinks can be used for both internal links as well as to external locations.

      Total cost = $0
