Paying for ModX
I’m in the last stages of developing a site in Modx and and am so impressed with the product, the team’s support and community, that we’ve decided to ’buy’ a copy of Mod X every time we roll out a new site. It’s a no-brainer for us since the development and evolution 9no pun intended) is in our interests.
I was just wondering what some of you guys do. Should we say, pay a percentage of each contract we win or a flat fee? There was a time when we included a free copy of Adobe Contribute to each client and that was about 200 USD so that to us would be an acceptable arangement. I realise this is completely up to our discretion but any suggestions on other designers / devs do would be appreciated.
Charging for ModX
Now that we’re added CMS to our services and are providing clients with a means to update their site, our income from ’maintenance’ will obviously take a hit. We’re keen to allow clients to maintain their site and offer them a CMS but are evaluating what we should be charging for a CMS or that service. Should we charge the client a ’licenscing fee’ or a ’support fee’? Hard to know.
Interestingly enough, I know a company that develops their own CMS in the UK and charges about 11 to 22K per annum for the CMS. I’ve see the CMS and it actually can’t do anything that ModX can’t and doesn’t do. Granted, they are selling this to world-wide Government Depts, large companies and Universities that have at least a couple of 1,000 pages. Now, obviously ModX isn’t ’ours’ and we’d never claim it was but essentially, they are charging for the same functionality that we can now provide.
Any thoughts on this? I realise that we are all companies of various sizes and operating in vastly different markets for different sized clients....

Ryan, I’ve seen spoilers like that all over the place.....
What’s going on?!
@Sparrow: we ask our clients only the costs of actually implementing and modifying MODx to suit their needs. Then again, we’re a small parttime company and our prices aren’t really that high anyway.
I have been thinking about making a donation to MODx for every site we deliver using it. Will bring it up with the rest of our team in one of the next meetings to see how they feel about it.
