Nice name for a domain smiley

The idea of a MODx marketplace of sorts has already emerged time and again, and it’s a great one but not that easy to set up.

First, it implies that people will look for MODx as a platform for their website to begin with. Few clients come to you with an already chosen CMS. I am not sure that MODx reputation is such that we’re there yet. We’re not Drupal, Typo3 or Joomla in this regard (at least, not yet...). We’re working at it, and we’ll sure continue to build up on good rep and nice showcase of what can be done with MODx (Banzai’s upcoming MODx websites directory will help greatly in that regard) but it will take some time.

Second, I am pretty convinced this should be put in perspective with what’s in store on the front of MODx related services. There will be in the near future a MODx optimized hosting platform, you’ll also see commercial support (see http://collabpad.com/services.html), but no doubt you’ll see other things arise. I am in favor of having this kind of Freelancers’ marketplace integrated to other MODx services and be run by the dev team commercial structure, e.g CollabPad. Credibility is of the essence for such a marketplace and who better than the people who have built and driven the community can do that ?

Third, and that’s tighlty linked to the second point, I don’t see such an initiative succeeding unless there is a "give back" to the project. Funding MODx developpement is key to its survival as an opensource projet. The high goals set for the new core sure will make this even more true. Having a share of what freelancers earn thanks to MODx put back into funding MODx is not only ethical but also the basis of a business model compatible with both open source community and commercial services.

The core team definitely have an "elance" model on our radar screen, and it looks like a foundation may be in our future as well. smiley

With that said, when it’s time to put those things together, scatter "MODx" references will become dicey from a trademark perspective without the appropriate licensing things in place ... at least that’s according to the legal folks I’m talking to. Thanks for registering that domain though and keeping it out of squatters’ hands!

Just so you’ll have a point of reference, the Drupal project leaders don’t allow anyone to market anything with "Drupal" as part of the name/url. I suspect other projects are similar.

The thing is, if you want to keep your name, you can’t let anybody use it without proper legal licensing.

As @sottwell said I update the copyright of modxlancers.com & I’m giving the right to the community.
Lets see in the future what this site will be. This will depend on the core & the community.

I can only speak to my experience during the past couple of months. After doing extensive research on various CMS programs, I came to the conclusion that Modx was right for what I was doing. Although I don’t know enough about html, xhtml, css or other skillsets to do the initial work. So I found someone with great modx experience and knowledge to program it and he is helping me craft a site that has major potential. One of the biggest negatives in my initial Modx experience was the effort to find a good resource to help me develop my site. (now i’m set and happy). So I think the tech savvy it manager or business owner will know what they want (modx) but may not want to spend the time or the effort to build it or decide that someone else is better qualified - I encourage any system to help facilitate that. i like the idea.
but currently the site comes up with a big fat Joomla logo.
Not so good for branding i would think.

                      My 2 cents....

When Ruby on Rails was registered by David Heinemeier Hansson and he began enforcing it, there was an explosion of quasi-branding which to me actually weakened the Rails community. I think if Modx is open-handed about it but remains the central force, you’ll achieve the result you are after.

As far as a gig site for Modx, I agree that we need to downplay the tools to the client, and emphasize the product that the CMS results in. There is always this bounty forum for Modx specific gigs. I could see something like MODxLancers for freelancer collaboration, particularly between designers and developers. For instance, I run my own company, get my own clients, but I am mostly a designer. I sub-contract programmers for the heavy lifting. To find them in one place might be helpful.

Reach the developers, not the end-users.
